St.Gabriels Badminton Club

st. gabs ethos

The majority of St. Gabriels members just happen to be gay men, but we warmly welcome all new players who enjoy the game and are prejudice-free. Many of our members have come from clubs looking for a better standard of play, and to find somewhere where they can be comfortable on or off the court. St.Gabs is a relatively new club, and because we only currently have one court, we only play mens doubles on club nights. However, we do also play singles and mixed doubles at tournaments. Our reasons for setting up the club and our aims:

1) Provide a badminton club in Central London where guys could play competitive badminton and integrate socially without prejudice towards their sexuality. (Homophobia unfortunately still exists to some degree in most UK sports organisations.)
2) Bring together players to represent and support British gay & lesbian sport at home and abroad.
3) Have fun.

level of play   We play twice a week and we've got over 20 members playing at either intermediate or advanced competitive level. Our two mens' doubles teams play in local feather leagues, and we also compete nationally and internationally at B-, B+ and A standard. We're hoping to attract more players who have had some league or even county experience, as well as set up matches against like-minded clubs.

off court   After a game, we normally head off down to the local pub in search of refreshment. David is the unofficial club social secretary and knows how to provide quality entertainment (and get players to matches on time). We drink lots, have barbecues, hit the clubs, and still have time to flirt disgracefully (baby), so why not join us.

juniors   We don't currently have any junior players (under 18), but some of us started off as club or county juniors, and wished that we could have found a club where we could relax and be ourselves. If you are under 18 and want to play in a supportive environment which respects your playing ability as well as your sexuality, get in touch.

lesbians needed   We're also looking for gay or straight female partners to play with us in national and international gay & lesbian tournaments. We've already established some good partnerships for continental tournaments, but we do need more women partners of any standard. Please Drop us a line if you can help :)

it's my first time   Don't worry If you're just starting out or haven't played competitively. There are at least 3 other gay badminton clubs in London which cover all standards of play. See our links page to find the right club for your game.
